This May Be The Most Harrowing Tsunami Video Yet

The nine-minute and three-second clip shows the coastline at One Hundred Stone Harbor in Oirase Town, Aomori Prefecture as the ocean rises, recedes, then rises again, ultimately dramatically overcoming the retaining wall.

A solitary man films the scene while bells from fishing vessels ring in the background as waves toss the ships around the bay.

At two points, the videographer sprints to higher ground as the Pacific Ocean threatens to engulf his previous position.

In the youtube description, he writes: ”I’m glad to not be counted among the dead.”

Jersey Shore braces for our first Nor’easter of the year?

Nor'easter Jersey Shore

Nor'easter Jersey ShoreA harmless-looking area of rain over the Ohio Valley midday Wednesday will grow into a powerful storm, impacting tens of millions of people in the Northeast with heavy rain and strong winds.
The worst of the rain, which can lead to urban and poor drainage flooding problems, will begin around the Delaware Valley and the Philadelphia, Trenton and Allentown areas late in the day Thursday.

From there, a 6- to 12-hour period of heavy rain will sweep northeastward through New York City, Albany, Hartford, Providence, Boston, Portland, Portsmouth and Burlington Thursday night and Friday.
Significant rain will also sweep into the Canadian cities of Montreal, Quebec, Fredericton, Moncton and Halifax.

Hurricane Earl, is it heading to the Jersey Shore?

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — Hurricane Earl, now a powerful Category 4 storm, barreled toward the U.S. coast early Tuesday after battering tiny islands across the northeastern Caribbean with heavy rain and winds that damaged homes and toppled power lines.

Earl is forecast to potentially brush the U.S. East Coast late Thursday, before curving back out to sea, potentially swiping New England or far-eastern Canada. The U.S. National Hurricane Center warned coastal residents from North Carolina to Maine to watch the storm closely.

“Any small shift in the track could dramatically alter whether it makes landfall or whether it remains over the open ocean,” said Wallace Hogsett, a meteorologist at the center. “I can’t urge enough to just stay tuned.”

In the Caribbean, Earl caused flooding in low-lying areas and damaged homes on islands including Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla and St. Maarten. Several countries and territories reported power outages. Cruise ships were diverted and flights canceled across the region.

The storm’s center passed just north of the British Virgin Islands on Monday afternoon. By nighttime, the hurricane was pulling away from the Caribbean, but heavy downpours still threatened to cause flash floods and mudslides in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands by drenching already saturated ground.

The Hurricane Center said it was too early to say what effect Earl would have in the U.S., but warned it could at least kick up dangerous rip currents. A surfer died in Florida and a Maryland swimmer had been missing since Saturday in waves spawned by former Hurricane Danielle, which weakened to a tropical storm Monday far out in the north Atlantic.

Craig Fugate, administrator of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said Earl’s approach ought to serve as a reminder for Atlantic coastal states to update their evacuation plans.

“It wouldn’t take much to have the storm come ashore somewhere on the coast,” Fugate said. “The message is for everyone to pay attention.”

Close on Earl’s heels, Tropical Storm Fiona formed Monday afternoon in the open Atlantic. The storm, with maximum winds of 40 mph (65 kph), was projected to pass just north of the Leeward Islands by Wednesday and stay farther out in the Atlantic than Earl’s northward path. Fiona wasn’t expected to reach hurricane strength over the next several days.

Hurricane Earl strengthens, could swipe U.S. east

* U.S. East Coast could feel effects later in week

(Recasts, adds quotes, details)

MIAMI, Aug 30 (Reuters) – Hurricane Earl battered the Northern Leeward Islands in the Caribbean on Monday and was poised to become a major Category 3 hurricane that could swipe the U.S. East Coast in the next few days, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Earl had maximum winds of close to 110 mph (175 kph), just short of major hurricane status, and was moving on a track that would take it northwest, to pass east of Cape Hatteras in North Carolina in the next few days.

“It’s forecast to become a Category 3 later today,” hurricane center forecaster Jessica Schauer told Reuters.

Schauer said authorities along the U.S. eastern seaboard should closely monitor Earl’s progress.

“Right now it’s forecast to pass off the coast of Cape Hatteras, probably within about 300 miles but that forecast track can change,” she said, acknowledging that a direct hit to the North Carolina coast could not be ruled out.
