LONG BRANCH NJ A— 12-year-old boy who was trapped beneath a collapsed sand tunnel he had built on a city beach Tuesday afternoon was pronounced dead by hospital personnel at 1:34 p.m. Wednesday, police said.
The unidentified boy was in intensive care at Monmouth Medical Center Tuesday night after the tunnel collapsed on him at the beach between Madison and Cooper avenues around 3:20 p.m. that afternoon, Captain Jason Roebuck said.
Lt. Frank Morey said the boy dug the tunnel with his younger brother who informed their mother about the incident. The mother had accompanied the boys to the beach.
